The Swiss government has extended the closure of all restaurants until the end of February. However many restaurants are operating a take-away service and this works very well, also on the ski-slopes. The best restaurants have a large terrace where you can enjoy your take-away in good comfort: tables have been removed, but not the fixed benches where you can sit in the sun and almost have a normal lunch. With wine if you like.
Non-essential shops are also closed, but the supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, news agents and wine shops are all open. Ski shops are open for rentals, and you can also pre-order items for collection. Services such as hair-dressers are also open.
Cervinia is still closed, but all the Zermatt ski lifts are fully functional and the conditions are some of the best in years due to recent much higher than average snowfalls. The slopes are quieter than usual, so this is the best possible time to come and ski in Zermatt.
