An Overview of Skiing & Boarding in Zermatt

Definetely one of the world's most spectacular ski resorts

For the 2007/2008 winter season, the old 2-seater chairlift from Findeln to Sunnegga is to be replaced by a comfortable, coupling 4-seater chairlift with heated seats, connecting Sunnegga paradise with Breitboden via Findeln. The system will accommodate a capacity of 2,000 passengers per hour, utilising 20 support towers, and the Sunnegga paradise will have a subterranean station. A new ski lift is also being constructed at Stockhorn which will open up the Stockhorn freeride area.

In 2006/2007 new lifts were a gondola link from Furi to Riffelberg, this is great news because it means that skiing across all three areas anti-clockwise is finally possible! It also makes it easy to ski the lovely and long Riffelberg-Furi run more than once per day. On the Italian side, Cervinia and Valtournenche are building 5 new chairlifts, replacing existing tows. This will considerably improve uphill speed, efficiency and comfort.

Zermatt has 3 main interconnected ski areas (200kms of runs) of its own and is also linked to Cervinia in Italy (another 200kms of runs), together these make up the "Matterhorn Ski Paradise", one of the most exciting ski areas in Europe. Click here for the ski area map.

The mix of runs is great, scenery is breathtaking, off-piste possibilities are excellent (depending on conditions) and mountain restaurants and apres-ski are exceptional. The highest lift is at over 3800m giving a vertical drop of over 2200m, snow on the upper runs is guaranteed all year round including in summer!

A number of key runs benefit from extensive snow-making equipment to boost snow conditions as needed. Zermatt also has its own terrain park, board-a-cross, halfpipe and cross-country circuit. The formidable lift system minimises waiting times.
